The lightweight and soft wood from younger trees is mainly used for pulping, whereas the heavier and harder wood of older trees is used as timber. My wife also ordered 10 slash pines, most of those are ok. The three yellow ones are turning brown and I don't expect them to survive. All were correctly planted and watered immediately in good soil for pines. The pinecone of the Slash Pine tree grows very sharp spikes around the edges that protect them from wildlife food searchers like turkeys and squirrels that love to eat the seeds. The Slash Pine tree is a native, southeastern shade tree that prefers humid climates, and both the pine cones and the needles of the Slash Pine tree are smaller than those of the Longleaf Pine but larger than those of the Loblolly Pine tree.
